The importance of “community” was the thread running through the presentations and discussions at the PLANED Annual Conference held on 9 July 2019.
Delegates got to hear from a range of speakers starting with Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed Powys, Dafydd Llywelyn, whose message that “no part of Wales is outside of a community” rang true with many in the room. He also noted the importance of youth engagement and the “crime curve” as an important part of crime prevention. The Commissioner also highlighted that we are not all in competition, and that we should be working more closely together to support the regeneration of communities.
PLANED CEO, Iwan Thomas then joined Scarlets and Wales Rugby players, Hannah Jones and Jasmine Joyce on the main stage for a Q and A session. Both players gave an honest account of their experience as female players in what is still seen as a male dominated sport. Both recognised the support that they had received to date locally, regionally and nationally in Wales but highlighted the disparity in terms of salary with the other UK home nations. Having both competed for Wales in the recent Six Nations Championship, the increased media coverage and profile has been of benefit in promoting female rugby participation.
The Prince’s Trust Wales Director, Philip Jones outlined the work of the Prince’s Trust and focussed in on local work in west Wales, emphasising the importance of potential in our young people and the strengths of partnership working. Philip promoted that there is a genuine magic when a young person comes to the Prince’s Trust, but it does not happen by magic. Success has many definitions and will vary for every young person. The Prince’s Trust is about supporting aspiration and ambition and looks forward to working more closely with partners in Pembrokeshire to help deliver this.
Iwan rounded off the conference highlighting the work of PLANED and the team to date, and emphasised how with the team approach in place at PLANED, it will go from strength to strength based on our passion for people, and ideas that change communities across west Wales.
The PLANED AGM and Annual Conference was hosted by Pembrokeshire College at the Merlin Theatre, and was sponsored by the Scarlets and the Prince’s Trust Cymru.
