The Towards One Planet Living (TOPL) project arose from PLANED’s involvement in community based sustainable development work, where there is an acceptance that we need, as individuals, communities and nations, to lessen our impact on the planet by reducing consumption, using less resources and behaving more responsibly towards our environment.
The overarching aim of TOPL is to help to build the capacity of individuals and groups within communities to participate in and take responsibility for the long-term development of the area. PLANED has proven that by increasing the capacity of local people to participate in the development of solutions for sustainable development and sustainable living, they will, over time gain confidence to network, undertake and manage projects and maintain the momentum generated.
We do this using the Sustainability Tool as part of a participative workshop, to encourage communities to understand how sustainability relates to them and their actions and projects, and to incorporate sustainable actions into their project planning to ensure their long term sustainability.
The Community Action Plan, created as a result of the workshops, documents all sustainability criteria and cross cutting themes that have been considered and forms a solid foundation to give projects the best chance of success for completion and also in funding applications. Coupled with this, TOPL also supports the creation of Community Forums, a coming together of local groups to collaboratively achieve the aims of the Action Plan.
Another key aspect of TOPL is the creation of a package entitled “A Community Route Map for Sustainable Living”. The Route map forms a comprehensive Best Practice guide of PLANED methodologies and training, providing a valuable resource for both communities and the organisations that support them.
