Preseli Walking Festival 2008

Writer and television presenter Trevor Fishlock joined members of PLANED to launch the Preseli Walking Circle.

There are few landscapes more inspirational for walking than the wild and rolling Preseli Hills. From these breathtaking hills, roamed by sheep and ponies, walkers can see across Cardigan Bay to the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland, Snowdonia to the north, the Brecon Beacons to the east and, to the south, the West Country.
The views alone are enough to encourage everyone to pull on their walking boots but there is also the appeal of the area’s natural moorland wilderness, the fascinating archaeological heritage and its distinct culture.
All these experiences will be celebrated in May at the first ever Preseli Walking Festival - Walking in the Shadow of the Hills, an event which offers choices of walks for all ages and abilities, from two mile rambles for the whole family to 17-mile navigation treks across the hills for experienced walkers.
The festival is a natural extension of the launch three years ago of the 67-mile Preseli Circle Walk, developed by PLANED (Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise and Development) in conjunction with Pembrokeshire County Council and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.
It is no co-incidence that the event is taking place in May, in the same month as five popular festivals in north Pembrokeshire – the established Newport Bay Spring Festival, the Fishguard Folk Festival, Maenclochog Festival and the St Dogmaels Festival and the recently launched Drovers Festival.
PLANED’s co-ordinator, Joan Asby, says people in these communities have been working hard to develop cultural and economic opportunities over a number of years. The Preseli Walking Festival aims to add an extra dimension to the experience by encouraging the people who participate in the walks to take part in the events already happening in these communities, says Mrs Asby.
“There are many people who already come to Pembrokeshire to walk who are also interested in the wider experience that the music, heritage and cuisine of the area can offer. The Preseli Walking Festival draws together these experiences,’’ she says.
As well as leisurely strolls along estuaries, treks along the top of the Preselis and guided walks through historic sites, there will be a literary walk led by Pembrokeshire author, Dr Brian John, whose books have been inspired by the Preselis.
He says there are many reasons why the Preselis are so popular with walkers. They are very dramatic in terms of landscape but are also small enough to be unintimidating, says Dr John. “I have always thought that the idea of a Preseli Circle that goes right around the Preselis and includes the coastal path stretches is wonderful,’’ he says.
“It is a beautiful and varied walking experience that people can have. And linking together segments of the circle with activities already taking place in the communities is inspirational. During the space of a month people can join walks at various stages and complete the whole circle if they so wish.’’

Preseli Walking Festival
Throughout May there are a series of Walks and Festivals celebrating the Preseli countryside.

New Resource for Festivals & Event Organisers

This handbook has been produced as a result of partnership working across Wales involving Leader+ groups, which have undertaken a number of collaborative activities to support community organized festivals and events. In addition each area has delivered various support measures such as training sessions, website development and networking opportunities for a range of interests. Feedback from participants in the project has influenced the production of this handbook which is intended to compliment existing resources. Whether you are organising a new event or developing an existing one you should find the information helpful and informative. The handbook will be downloadable shortly…

Roll Up! Roll Up! For our Festival & Event networking event on November 29th

Festivals & Events Can Contribute to Local Economy
Successful festivals and events can help to develop local pride and confidence and stimulate the local economy, thus contributing to the area’s regeneration. They can also attract tourists to areas previously not visited, or less frequented by visitors.

That is one of the reasons why PLANED and other three Leader+ groups (Adventa, Cadwyn Clwyd and Northern Marches Cymru) across Wales are working jointly on the Action 2 Leader+ project “Making a Positive Impact on the local economy: a professional approach to organising festivals and events” which aims to maximise the local economic benefit that well-planned, organised and promoted festivals and events make in rural areas and to demonstrate the value of local events as both economic and social drivers.
Each group has identified and implemented activities in own areas, as well as working jointly on research, marketing and sharing best practice.
At the local level PLANED’s support can operate on number of levels:

  • Individual festivals and events in communities that have not previously had events committees
  • Town/village festival and events groups planning their first local programme of events
  • Area community-led festivals and events groups promoting festivals within that area
  • Regional festival and event groups of communities working together
  • Community based festival and event groups from several communities linked by a common theme.

At the pan-Wales level the co-operation and joint working of this project has resulted in a study commissioned from Leeds Metropolitan University to asses what contribution community festivals and events make to local areas in terms of their social and economic impact.
This study looked at several festivals in all four areas during 2005 it found was an overwhelming belief that the events brought a range of benefits to the community and most also felt that local businesses benefited from the events. Two festivals in Pembrokeshire, the Narberth Food Festival and Pembroke Festival were among six detailed case studies. The study found that the Narberth Food Festival, which takes place in mid September, had an estimated positive net impact to the value of £34,500 and the Pembroke Festival happening in first week in September had an estimated positive net impact £16,989.
In order to highlight events in rural Wales especially in shoulder season the Leader groups appointed Golley Slater, a PR company based in Cardiff, to develop a marketing plan to promote festivals and events in their areas and throughout the UK and EU.

With the strapline “It’s all happening in rural Wales” this marketing campaign includes:

  • Features
  • Familiarisation visits for journalists
  • Press packs
  • Competitions for readers
  • PR activity to generate news coverage

One of the key benefits of the project is the opportunity for the event organisers to network and share experiences with their counterparts across Wales.
To date three networking events have been held, last one being a visit to Llangollen Food Festival, where the event organisers had an opportunity to learn about the organisation of the festival, pick up some marketing tips at a workshop session facilitated by Russell Ferguson of Russell Ferguson Marketing and to share and exchange their experiences and ideas with others.
Further networking opportunities planned include a visit to:

  • Anglesey Walking Festival in June
  • Lanark Medieval Festival in August
  • Abergavenny Food Festival in September
