Community & Sustainable Development
The Bigger Picture
The national importance
of Pembrokeshire's wildlife and landscapes is confirmed by the fact that almost 10%
of the county is protected as sites of scientific interest. The region
has eight national nature reserves and internationally important habitats.
There are nine registered landscapes of historic interest and thousands of
historic sites and monuments.
The quality of the environment and the wealth of natural resources are the
basis of the local economy and a strong attraction for visitors and investors. Most
visitors to Pembrokeshire come to enjoy the countryside. Outdoor and environment
activities account for a third of the revenue from tourism in Wales plus
17% of jobs and 9% of GDP.
The National Assembly for Wales is committed to the principles or suitable development. They recognise that communities in Wales are well placed to make a major contribution through their 'capacity for local innovation and for taking a holistic approach to problems experienced by people'.
'The National Assembly for Wales will promote development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This means that we should treat the Earth as though we intend to stay'.
'Valuing
the Environment
The Community Approach'
